A Short History of Hummdrumm Records

Hummdrumm Records began its journey in London in 1990, created by a South African-born music professional with a passion for songwriting, creativity, and independent music culture. After relocating to the UK in the mid-1980s, the label’s originator built a strong career in the record industry, working in international licensing at PRT/PYE Records and helping bring iconic catalogue artists such as The Kinks, Sandie Shaw, Petula Clark, and The Searchers to new global audiences.

In 1988, the label’s originator joined the Canadian independent label Brouhaha as A&R Manager, collaborating with respected producer Colin Thurston and engineer Martin Aelred Colgan. This period saw the signing and development of several emerging acts, including electronica outfit Westwon, Dennis Seaton (formerly of Musical Youth), Philip Japp, and the UK Eurovision act Live Report, who achieved national chart success and placed second in the 1989 Eurovision Song Contest.

Hummdrumm Records was officially launched under the distribution company Discovery Sounds. Its first release came from the independent act UK TAG, who issued both the vinyl EP Amateurs and the CD single Examine Me Roughly.

In 1994, the label’s originator took on a senior role at Mo’s Music Machine—the UK’s largest dance distributor—leading its International Licensing and Export division and continuing to champion independent artists and labels. Over the years, additional record labels and publishing ventures were also formed, supporting a wide range of music projects across the UK and beyond.

After a period of inactivity, Hummdrumm Records returned in 2014 with a renewed focus, starting with the signing of heavy metal band Everafter. Since then, the label has expanded its roster to include diverse and innovative acts such as The Indigo Rising, Toucan, and Martin Aelred Colgan. Today, Hummdrumm Records continues to build on its independent legacy, supporting creative talent and contributing to a vibrant musical landscape.
